Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
