The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
