Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
