Our Leading Release of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Top Position.

At first glance, this work might appear more like a difficult scholarly challenge rather than a new pop album from a musician whose previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Divided into four different parts and voiced in 13 languages, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus that delves into feminine mystique, religious ascent, and bodily transformation, often by way of the prism of different women saints. The end of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot upwards here, carried by the constant presence of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a long roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to transcend overly academic chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and complete credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first album to alchemize the past with modern styles, its stakes are far greater here, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. What really raises her fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist during her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy shines clearly during the stunning piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, everything drops away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic track featuring racing strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album is that the listener never quite understand—nor wish to predict—where it is going to next."

Almost every song concludes at a completely different point from how it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating into digital cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work begins out moody and brooding, with menacing beats, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of Lux is straddling the line between bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is little surprise that the album has become the artist's first release to crack the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in English builds on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging melodies as it spins skyward. This feat is echoed by another expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a painted-on edge, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux is pop on a grand level, a hungry reach for high Art in an era of looming artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep well of buried gems that takes patience to fully explore but never seem like hard work. While other big pop albums of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, this record offers a lavish feast at which the characters at it, some intoxicated on holy wine, flutter between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
