The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
