Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
